Tuskegee University (“TU”)

College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health, Department of Nursing (“CVMNAH”)

TU is among an elite class of highly prestigious historically Black college and universities (“HBCUs) with well-established reputations for producing the best professionals in every educational discipline. In 1947, CVMNAH received formal commendation by the Alabama State Board of Examiners for exceptional progress since its 1892 establishment as a nursing academy for students of color. The following year, it became Alabama’s first bachelor of Nursing program and one of the oldest of all HBCUs. Results of a nationwide survey conducted just one year later ranked it among the top 25 percent of all U.S. nursing programs.

CVNMAH graduates have compiled a record of positive contributions to the nursing profession too numerous to list here. One especially prime point of pride, however, are the five graduates who earned official recognition via military decoration for courageous service throughout the Spanish-American War who were also the only African American nurses working for the federal government.

CVMNAH is the only college in the country that combines veterinary and conventional nursing education into a single comprehensive and cohesion education regime called One Health – One Medicine.
