Malek School of Health Professions

Marymount University was established in 1950 under the guidance of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary. This Catholic institution of higher learning is located in a suburb of Washington, DC in Arlington, Virginia. With a student body of 3,700, MU follows a liberal arts core and requires every major to take credits toward subjects such as writing, natural and social sciences, philosophy, mathematics, humanities, and theology/religious studies. In addition, all undergraduate students are exposed to hands-on learning through mandatory career studies with internships, research projects, clinical experiences or student-teaching placements.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The Malek School of Health Professions’ traditional BSN program is designed for freshmen and non-nursing transfer students. All candidates must complete the general education core through Marymount University or transfer credit plus the prerequisite nursing classwork prior to application to the upper division professional program. The professional nursing syllabus consists of theory, simulation laboratory instruction and demonstration, plus hands-on practice at clinical sites and health care agencies. The simulation laboratories have recently expanded to include pregnant mother and newborn infant mannequins. Completion of all requirements leads to a baccalaureate degree and eligibility for registered nurse licensure.

Marymount University’s Malek School of Health Professions added two new patient simulators – a pregnant mother and newborn infant – to its simulation laboratories.

Upper division classes, clinicals and lab work begin during the second semester of the sophomore year. The Clinical Simulation Centers of Radford University provide a shared resource program with six nursing schools in Southwest Virginia. This advanced approach provides a safe, state-of-the-art simulation experience for accurate, realistic training. Program accreditation has been granted through the CCNE. NCLEX-RN examination success will give graduates Licensed Registered Nurse status.

Radford University, Roanoke, VA

Waldron College of Health and Human Services/School of Nursing

Located in the Roanoke Higher Education Center in Roanoke, Virginia, approximately 50 miles east of the main campus of Radford University, the School of Nursing offers a unique perspective on higher education. In 2000, the former Norfolk and Western Railroad headquarters opened as a newly renovated institution for higher learning. By utilizing federal and state historic tax credits as well as local and private funding, the 1931 art deco building was transformed to provide 200 programs of study to first class of 2,500 students.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

As the only in-residence nursing program at Radford University, 100 students each semester interact with nursing students from other universities to learn general education, behavioral and social sciences, and basic and applied sciences toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Students benefit from the Roanoke urban campus through peer camaraderie, cultural diversity and a close-knit professional community. Upper-division students utilize The Clinical Simulation Centers of Radford University located at the main Radford campus for additional instruction at a technologically advanced facility.

Sentara College of Health Sciences, Chesapeake, VA

School of Nursing

Sentara College of Health Sciences began in 1892 and was Norfolk’s first nursing program. Today, the college is owned by Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, an acute care hospital, operated by its administration, and is the primary teaching facility for the college. The first U.S. in-vitro baby was conceived and born at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and has earned it international acclaim. SCHS serves close to 550 students annually and offers six unique, professional programs. Many graduates stay on with the hospital or college to become staff members at this prestigious institution.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is designed for education of registered nurses. In this capacity, nurses will be responsible for patient care – assessing needs, establish a plans of care, manage treatments, educate clients and supervise other caregivers. The BSN program incorporates skills required for leadership positions in administration, management and healthcare evaluation. Sentara College of Health Sciences follows a traditional BSN program but has expanded experiences available for clinical and laboratory segments due to its affiliation to the Sentara Healthcare system.
