DON has been providing nursing education for young women since its initial inception in the 1940s as one of Connecticut’s first baccalaureate nursing degree programs. In fact, its establishment was one of the medical community’s many fervent efforts to address the then-rampant polio epidemic that was rapidly sweeping throughout the entire country. DON has come a long way since then and currently offers its BSN in three formats: 1) a Traditional four-year option available exclusively to female students; 2) an RN to BSN option available to male and female enrollees with current RN licensure and an associate’s degree in nursing; and, 3) an accelerated Second Degree option for those students of both genders who hold a non-BSN undergraduate degree.

During the first year of studies, students in the four-year Traditional BSN degree track complete coursework in Microbiology, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Anatomy, and Physiology. Advanced specialized nursing-specific instruction begins in the second year and continues until program completion. DON’s Nursing Learning Center and Lab is the hub of BSN instruction. The facility houses state-of-the-art simulation equipment with which students learn practical nursing skills such as such as dressings, catheter insertions, and delivering babies.
